What Is Fusion and Why Is It SO Important?
Since the late 19th century, the dependence on fossil fuels and in particular petroleum-based fuels has created an economic imbalance in the world. We have bet on mostly non-renewable resources-or certainly one that will not keep pace with demand-for our future well-being.

In nuclear science there are two ways of releasing energy. Fission, the splitting of atoms, is the foundation of nuclear weapons and such commercial machinery as the light water reactor. Fission, although an efficient energy source, has problems. Those include radioactive waste materials that are highly toxic. And there is the need to contain the chain reaction that produces the heat in a fission nuclear reactor. Fission also requires refinement of elements not easily attainable and which in themselves are radioactive and have a lengthy half-life.

Fusion, on the other hand, is derived from more easily attainable materials such as deuterium and tritium. The former is everywhere, especially in sea water. The latter must be "bred," meaning it is developed from other elements by a refinement process. That process is not nearly as difficult or hazardous as breeding nuclear fission fuel. The breeding also does not produce a material that can be turned into weapons.

Fusion occurs when the ions of an element such as deuterium are forced to collide and split off a neutron. This "fusion" causes a great deal of heat. The heat can be used to boil water or another heat transfer agent. The liquid becomes steam and the steam can be used to turn a turbine.

An efficient and useful fusion reactor, does not need to be a massive piece of machinery with huge 30-story containment vessels, such as is the case with fission. It can be constructed in various sizes and be adapted to many uses. And there is no "nuclear waste" to be disposed of.
